EXION vs Morpheus8 RF Microneedling: Which Is Better?

Jessica Lara, PA-C Founder, Defiance Health · First clinic in the Rocky Mountain region to offer EXION by BTL Aesthetics

If you've been researching RF microneedling, you've almost certainly seen both EXION and Morpheus8 come up. They're both radiofrequency microneedling devices. They both treat skin laxity, fine lines, and texture. They're both used by aesthetic clinics across the country.

So what's actually different? And why did Defiance Health invest in EXION over Morpheus8?

I'm going to give you an honest, technology-focused breakdown — not a sales pitch. You can decide what makes sense for you.

First: What Is RF Microneedling?

Both devices deliver radiofrequency (RF) energy through tiny needles inserted into the skin. The needles create micro-injuries that trigger your body's healing response (collagen and elastin production), while the RF energy heats the deeper layers of the dermis to further stimulate tightening and remodeling.

The result: smoother texture, reduced pores, improved skin laxity, diminished acne scars, and a generally more youthful appearance — without surgery.

The key differences come down to how each device delivers that RF energy, how deep it penetrates, and how comfortable the treatment is.

The Technology Difference That Actually Matters

Here's the thing most comparison articles gloss over: the biggest difference between EXION and Morpheus8 isn't about who's "better" in a vague sense — it's about how they achieve depth.

Morpheus8 physically inserts needles to the treatment depth (up to 8mm). This is effective, but it's also what makes the treatment painful and what requires more recovery time. The needles have to go all the way in to deliver energy at depth.

EXION uses AI-optimized monopolar RF energy that propagates beyond the needle tip — reaching depths of up to 8mm without the needle having to physically penetrate that far. Think of it like the difference between drilling a hole versus using focused sound waves to reach the same depth. Same destination, very different journey for your skin.

The result: EXION can achieve the same depth of tissue remodeling with significantly less trauma to the surface of your skin — which means less pain, less downtime, and less risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

The Hyaluronic Acid Advantage

This is EXION's most clinically interesting differentiator: it's the only RF microneedling device that stimulates your skin to produce more of its own hyaluronic acid (HA).

Why does that matter? Hyaluronic acid is the molecule responsible for your skin's hydration and plumpness. You lose HA with age — it's a big part of why mature skin looks thinner and drier. Morpheus8 (like most RF devices) focuses on collagen and elastin production. EXION does all three: collagen, elastin, and HA.

For patients concerned with skin hydration, hollowness, and that "deflated" look that collagen-builders don't fully address, this is a meaningful difference.

What Does EXION Actually Treat?

At Defiance Health, we use EXION for:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles — face, neck, and décolleté
  • Skin laxity and crepiness — especially early jowling, neck looseness, and above-the-knee laxity
  • Acne scars — one of the most effective treatments available for atrophic (pitted) scars
  • Enlarged pores
  • Stretch marks — abdomen, hips, thighs
  • Overall skin texture — dullness, roughness, uneven tone
  • Surgical scars

Because EXION is safe for all skin tones, it's a particularly strong option for patients with medium to deep skin tones who've been told they're not candidates for aggressive laser treatments.

How Many Treatments Do You Need?

Most patients see the best results from a series of 3–4 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Results continue to improve for 3–6 months after the final treatment as collagen and HA production continues to ramp up.

Some patients choose to do one treatment per year as a maintenance protocol. Others do a series every 1–2 years depending on their skin goals and age.

Can You Combine EXION with Other Treatments?

Absolutely — and we often do. EXION pairs beautifully with:

  • EMFACE — EMFACE addresses muscle tone and the upper layers of skin; EXION addresses the deeper dermis. Together they cover every layer of facial aging.
  • BBL Hero / IPL — treat pigmentation and redness while EXION handles texture and laxity
  • ZO Skin Health skincare — medical-grade skincare maximizes and maintains your in-office results

Who Shouldn't Get RF Microneedling?

RF microneedling (including EXION) is not appropriate for patients with active acne breakouts in the treatment area, certain implanted electronic devices (pacemakers), keloid scar history, or pregnancy. A consultation with our team will determine if you're a good candidate.

Why Defiance Health Chose EXION

When we were evaluating RF microneedling devices, we looked at everything on the market — including Morpheus8, Potenza, Sylfirm X, and Vivace. We chose EXION for three reasons:

  1. Better patient experience. We see real people with real lives. Less pain and less downtime means patients actually complete their treatment series and get results.
  2. Broader patient eligibility. Being able to treat all skin tones without increased risk matters in our diverse patient community.
  3. The hyaluronic acid factor. Skin hydration and volume loss are real concerns for our patients. A device that addresses HA production on top of collagen and elastin is clinically superior for a wider range of concerns.

We were also the first clinic in the Rocky Mountain region to introduce EXION. We believe in staying at the leading edge of what technology can offer — not just offering what everyone else already has.
