What Is MOXI Laser?

Non-Ablative Fractional Laser by Sciton

MOXI is a non-ablative fractional laser system by Sciton designed for skin rejuvenation and preventative anti-aging. Unlike aggressive ablative lasers that remove the skin's surface layer, MOXI works beneath the skin to stimulate collagen production and cellular turnover without damaging the epidermis.

Using a 1927nm wavelength that targets water in the skin's superficial layers, MOXI creates thousands of microscopic treatment zones across your skin. This fractional approach triggers your skin's natural healing response, leading to visible improvements in texture, tone, and firmness.

Because the surface layer remains intact, downtime is minimal compared to ablative options like CO2 or traditional Fraxel. Most patients experience just 1–3 days of mild "sandpaper skin" before revealing a brighter, more refined complexion.

The Lunchtime Laser

Real Results Without the Recovery Room

MOXI is often called "the lunchtime laser" because you can do it on your lunch break and return to your day with minimal disruption. You get genuine collagen stimulation and progressive skin rejuvenation — without taking a week off work.

How It Works

The Science Behind the Glow

MOXI laser technology uses a 1927nm wavelength that's specifically absorbed by water in the skin. This wavelength penetrates the superficial layers of the dermis, creating thousands of microscopic treatment zones — areas of controlled thermal injury.

Your skin responds to these micro-injuries by ramping up collagen production and promoting cellular turnover. New collagen is denser and more organized, leading to improvements in skin texture and smoothness, fine lines and early wrinkles, skin tone and radiance, and overall skin firmness.

Ablative Lasers

Traditional lasers like CO2 vaporize the surface layer of skin. Dramatic results, but significant downtime — often 10–14 days of visible healing. Not suitable year-round. Higher risk of pigmentation complications.

Non-Ablative MOXI

Works beneath the intact surface to trigger collagen without removing skin. You get real collagen stimulation with only 1–3 days of mild recovery. Safe year-round. Safe for all skin types. The "fractional advantage" — only a fraction of your skin is treated at once, letting the untreated tissue act as a healing reservoir.

What Does MOXI Treat?

Preventative Maintenance for Your Skin

MOXI is ideal for anyone concerned with preventative skin maintenance or mild-to-moderate aging and damage. It's often called the "preventative maintenance" laser because it helps you stay ahead of aging rather than fix severe damage.

Sun Damage & Photodamage

Years of UV exposure fade skin tone and create texture irregularities. MOXI stimulates collagen remodeling to improve overall skin quality.

Melasma & Uneven Tone

Hormonal or UV-triggered pigmentation responds well to fractional laser treatment, especially when combined with aggressive sun protection.

Fine Lines & Early Wrinkles

New collagen production fills in fine lines and improves skin elasticity. Results improve over months as collagen continues to remodel.

Dull, Tired Skin

Cellular turnover reveals fresh, vibrant skin underneath. Most patients notice a "glow" within 1–2 weeks.

Age Spots & Hyperpigmentation

Fractional laser disperses concentrated melanin and stimulates cellular turnover to fade discoloration.

Rough Texture

Stimulated collagen fills in textural irregularities and pore enlargement over time.

How MOXI Compares

MOXI vs. Other Laser & Light Technologies

Not all lasers are created equal. Here's how MOXI compares to other popular skin rejuvenation options.

Technology What It Does Downtime Results Timeline Best For
MOXI (Non-ablative fractional) Stimulates collagen beneath intact skin 1–3 days (minimal) 4–12 weeks Preventative, mild-moderate aging, year-round
Fraxel (Ablative fractional) More aggressive collagen stimulation 5–7 days (moderate) 2–4 weeks Moderate sun damage, deeper wrinkles
BBL / IPL Targets pigment and vascularity only 0–1 day 1–2 weeks Redness, brown spots (no texture improvement)
CO2 (Ablative) Vaporizes entire skin layer 10–14 days (significant) Weeks to months Severe damage, deep wrinkles, scars

The MOXI sweet spot: MOXI sits between gentle BBL treatments (which don't build collagen) and aggressive Fraxel treatments (which require more downtime). You get real collagen stimulation and visible results with the convenience of minimal downtime.

What to Expect

Treatment Day & Beyond

MOXI is a straightforward treatment with predictable recovery. Here's exactly what to expect from prep through final results.

Before Treatment

Preparation

Avoid sun exposure and tanning for 2 weeks prior. Stop retinoids and exfoliating products 3–5 days before. Come with clean skin and no makeup. Wear SPF 30+ daily leading up to your appointment.

During Treatment

15–30 Minutes

Your skin is cleansed and cooling gel applied. Laser pulses feel like a warm, prickling sensation — often described as mild heat. Numbing cream is available if desired.

Day 0

Immediately After

Skin will be red and feel warm, like a mild sunburn. Typically fades within a few hours. Some mild swelling possible, especially around the eyes. Avoid hot water and exercise 24–48 hours. SPF 50+ immediately.

Days 1–3

The Sandpaper Phase

Skin may feel slightly rough as natural exfoliation happens. Continue moisturizing and SPF 50+. Most patients return to normal activities within 24–48 hours. Makeup can usually be worn by day 2.

Days 4–7

The Glow Phase

Rough texture resolves and skin begins to look brighter and smoother. Discoloration may temporarily darken as melanin is pushed to the surface (normal). Be gentle — your skin barrier is still recovering.

Weeks 2–12

Progressive Improvement

Collagen remodeling continues for 8–12 weeks. Progressive improvement in texture, fine lines, firmness, and radiance. Discoloration from melasma or sun spots gradually lightens.

Treatment Protocol

Number of sessions: Most patients see excellent results with 2–4 MOXI sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Your plan is customized to your concerns and goals.

Maintenance: After your initial series, 1–2 maintenance treatments per year sustain results and continue preventative collagen building.

The Ultimate Combo

MOXI + BBL Hero: The Gold Standard

Many of our patients choose to combine MOXI with BBL Hero for the ultimate skin rejuvenation experience. The two treatments address completely different problems — combined, they cover every major sign of aging.

MOXI Handles Texture & Collagen

Non-ablative fractional laser stimulates collagen production deep in the dermis, improving fine lines, texture, firmness, and overall skin quality.

BBL Hero Handles Pigment & Redness

Intense pulsed light targets brown spots, melasma, rosacea, and broken capillaries — addressing discoloration and vascular concerns that MOXI doesn't directly target.

The Combined Effect

Together they address every major aging concern: texture, firmness, fine lines, pigmentation, vascular issues, and radiance. Often called the "gold standard" of non-surgical skin rejuvenation.

All Skin Types

Safe for Fitzpatrick I–VI (fair to very dark skin). Customizable settings allow safe treatment without the pigmentation risks common with other lasers.

Year-Round Candidates

Unlike most laser treatments, MOXI can be done year-round including summer. Just maintain strict sun protection (SPF 50+) for 2 weeks post-treatment.

Preventative-Minded

Ideal for those in their 20s–40s who want to stay ahead of aging and maintain youthful skin before damage accumulates.

Sun Damage Concerns

Perfect for patients with mild-to-moderate sun damage, age spots, melasma, or overall photodamage.

Minimal Downtime Needs

Ideal for busy professionals who can't afford extended downtime. 1–3 days is manageable for nearly everyone.

Realistic Expectations

MOXI delivers excellent results for fine lines, texture, and mild-to-moderate aging — but isn't designed for severe deep wrinkles or advanced skin laxity.

Not a Good Candidate If:

  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding (discuss alternatives with your provider)
  • You have active cold sores or open wounds in the treatment area
  • You have a history of keloid formation (discuss with provider)
  • You're taking certain medications like Accutane (must wait 1 year post-treatment)
  • You have very dark skin with recent sun exposure (discuss alternative wavelengths)
Common Questions

MOXI Laser FAQs

Most patients describe the sensation as warm and prickling, similar to a gentle sunburn. It's well tolerated by nearly everyone. If you have a low pain tolerance, we can apply numbing cream beforehand. The treatment time is short (15–30 minutes), making it very manageable.

Most patients experience 1–3 days of mild "sandpaper" texture and redness, which easily resolves. You can return to work and normal activities within 24 hours (makeup can be worn by day 2). This is significantly less downtime than ablative lasers like CO2 or aggressive Fraxel, which require 5–10 days of healing.

Yes. One of MOXI's major advantages is that it's safe year-round, including summer. Unlike many aggressive laser treatments, you can do MOXI and still enjoy your summer — just commit to strict sun protection (SPF 50+) for at least 2 weeks post-treatment. No extended sun avoidance required.

Yes. MOXI is safe for all Fitzpatrick skin types (I–VI). The technology's customizable settings and specific 1927nm wavelength make it one of the safest fractional laser options for darker skin tones. Unlike some other lasers, MOXI has a very low risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (darkening) or hypopigmentation (lightening).

Most patients see excellent results with 2–4 treatments spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Your specific number depends on your goals and starting skin condition. Some patients do just 1 session for mild concerns; others benefit from 4+ for more significant concerns. Many patients then do 1–2 maintenance treatments yearly.

You'll notice immediate effects (glow, brightness) within 1–2 weeks as cellular turnover begins. However, the most dramatic improvements happen over 8–12 weeks as new collagen is laid down and remodels. Many patients continue seeing improvement for up to 6 months after their last treatment. Results continue progressing with each session in a series.

Absolutely. MOXI pairs beautifully with BBL Hero to address both texture/collagen (MOXI) and pigment/redness (BBL). Many patients do them together or alternate sessions. MOXI can also be combined with EXION RF microneedling, chemical peels, and other skin treatments — we'll space them appropriately to allow healing.

MOXI stimulates your body to produce new collagen — that's real, lasting improvement. However, your skin continues aging naturally. Most patients enjoy results for 6–12 months before choosing maintenance treatments (1–2 per year). This is very normal and expected. Regular sun protection, skincare, and lifestyle habits extend results significantly. Think of it like preventative maintenance for your skin's ongoing health.

MOXI is very safe. Common, temporary effects include redness, mild swelling, and roughness (1–3 days). Rare side effects can include temporary hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation (especially if sun protection is neglected). Very rarely, patients may experience temporary sensitivity. Serious complications like scarring are extremely uncommon with proper technique and aftercare.

Stop retinoids, vitamin C, AHAs, BHAs, and other active ingredients 3–5 days before treatment. Your skin barrier should be strong and calm. After treatment, avoid all actives for at least 1 week, then reintroduce gradually. For 2 weeks post-treatment, focus only on gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and SPF 50+. We recommend ZO Skin Health for a clinically designed skincare routine.

We accept cash, credit cards, HSA/FSA cards, and offer financing through CareCredit and Cherry for patients who want to spread costs over time. Both offer promotional financing with no or low interest for qualified applicants. You can apply for either directly through their websites before your appointment.
