What is peptide therapy?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks that make up the proteins in your body. They act as precise biological messengers, signaling your cells, glands, and organs to perform specific functions: release hormones, repair tissue, regulate metabolism, improve sleep, and more.

Your body naturally produces hundreds of peptides, but their levels decline significantly with age. By your 30s and 40s, many of the peptides responsible for energy, growth hormone release, fat metabolism, and cellular repair are operating well below their peak. This decline is one of the key biological drivers behind the fatigue, weight gain, slow recovery, and reduced vitality that so many adults experience as they get older.

Peptide therapy at Defiance Health uses clinically validated, prescription-grade peptides — administered under full medical supervision — to restore and optimize these signaling pathways. Every protocol is personalized based on your symptoms, lab results, health history, and goals. We don't offer one-size-fits-all programs; we build individualized plans designed around your unique biology.

What Can Peptide Therapy Help With?

Patients come to Defiance Health for peptide therapy for a wide range of reasons. The most common goals we support include:

Weight Loss & Metabolic Health Some of the most clinically proven peptides in existence are GLP-1 receptor agonists, used for medically supervised weight loss. If you've struggled with stubborn weight despite diet and exercise, peptide-based weight loss therapy may be the missing piece. Our Semaglutide and Tirzepatide programs have helped hundreds of patients achieve sustainable, meaningful results.

Growth Hormone Optimization Growth hormone (GH) plays a critical role in muscle development, fat metabolism, sleep quality, tissue repair, bone density, and overall vitality. Growth hormone secretagogues — peptides that stimulate your pituitary gland to produce more of your own natural GH — are among the most sought-after tools in longevity and anti-aging medicine.

Energy & Fatigue Persistent fatigue that doesn't resolve with sleep is often a sign of hormonal or metabolic imbalance. Certain peptides work by optimizing growth hormone levels, cellular energy production, and mitochondrial function — addressing fatigue at its root rather than masking symptoms.

Body Composition & Performance Peptide therapy can support lean muscle development, reduce visceral fat, accelerate recovery from exercise and injury, and improve physical performance — making it a powerful tool for both athletes and anyone looking to improve their physique and feel stronger.

Sexual Health & Libido Hormonal decline affects sexual desire and function in both men and women. Certain FDA-approved peptides directly address hypoactive sexual desire — often producing results where other treatments have fallen short.

Mood, Stress & Sleep Several peptides and peptide-adjacent therapies support neurotransmitter balance, reduce anxiety, improve sleep architecture, and promote an overall sense of wellbeing — working synergistically with hormone therapy for comprehensive results.

Skin, Immunity & Cellular Health Glutathione, often called the body's "master antioxidant," is one of the most powerful tools available for immune support, detoxification, skin brightness, and cellular protection. When administered via injection or IV, it bypasses the digestive system for maximum absorption and effect.

Peptides We Offer at Defiance Health

All peptide therapies at Defiance Health are prescription-based, medically supervised, and sourced from licensed, compliant compounding pharmacies and pharmaceutical manufacturers. Below is an overview of the peptides and peptide-class therapies we currently offer.

Semaglutide (GLP-1 Receptor Agonist)

Best for: Medical weight loss, blood sugar regulation, metabolic health

Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic and one of the most clinically studied weight loss medications available today. It works by mimicking the GLP-1 hormone, which signals fullness, slows gastric emptying, and reduces appetite — making it significantly easier to eat less without feeling deprived. Clinical trials have demonstrated average weight loss of 15% or more of body weight with sustained use.

At Defiance Health, Semaglutide is administered as a weekly injection as part of a comprehensive medical weight loss program that includes body composition monitoring, nutrition guidance, and ongoing provider support. Programs start at $200/month. Telehealth options are available for residents of Colorado and select other states.

Tirzepatide (Dual GIP/GLP-1 Receptor Agonist)

Best for: Medical weight loss, metabolic optimization, blood sugar control

Tirzepatide — the active compound in Mounjaro and Zepbound — represents the next generation of metabolic peptide therapy. Unlike Semaglutide, which targets a single receptor, Tirzepatide activates two complementary pathways (GLP-1 and GIP), producing even more potent effects on appetite, blood sugar, and fat metabolism. In clinical trials, patients lost an average of 20–22% of their body weight — making it the most effective pharmaceutical weight loss option currently available.

Tirzepatide is an excellent choice for patients who have tried other weight loss approaches without adequate results, or who are managing type 2 diabetes alongside weight concerns. Weekly self-injection, with full provider oversight.

Sermorelin

Best for: Growth hormone optimization, anti-aging, energy, sleep, body composition

Sermorelin is a growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) analogue — it stimulates the pituitary gland to produce and secrete your own natural growth hormone, rather than introducing synthetic HGH from outside the body. This makes it one of the safest and most physiologically aligned approaches to growth hormone optimization available.

Sermorelin has a long track record in clinical medicine and remains one of the most accessible and legally sound growth hormone secretagogues available through compounding pharmacies today. Benefits reported by patients include improved energy levels, better sleep quality, enhanced body composition (more lean muscle, less fat), improved skin elasticity, and faster recovery from exercise and injury.

Sermorelin is typically administered as a nightly subcutaneous injection and is most effective when combined with proper sleep, nutrition, and exercise.

Tesamorelin

Best for: Visceral fat reduction, growth hormone deficiency, metabolic health, body composition

Tesamorelin is an FDA-approved synthetic analogue of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) with a particularly strong clinical track record for reducing visceral adipose tissue — the dangerous deep abdominal fat that surrounds internal organs and drives metabolic disease. Originally developed and approved for HIV-related lipodystrophy, Tesamorelin has since been widely adopted in longevity and metabolic medicine for its significant effects on body composition.

Among growth hormone-stimulating peptides, Tesamorelin stands out for its specificity and the quality of the clinical data supporting it. Patients typically see meaningful reductions in belly fat alongside improvements in IGF-1 levels, lipid profiles, and overall metabolic markers. It is administered as a daily subcutaneous injection and is particularly well-suited for patients whose primary concern is abdominal fat that has been resistant to diet and exercise.

NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide)

Best for: Cellular energy, cognitive function, anti-aging, metabolic health, addiction recovery support

NAD+ is a coenzyme found in every living cell and is essential to mitochondrial function, DNA repair, energy metabolism, and healthy aging. It is one of the most researched and widely discussed molecules in longevity medicine — and for good reason. NAD+ levels decline by roughly 50% between the ages of 40 and 60, contributing to the fatigue, cognitive fog, and metabolic slowdown many people experience in midlife.

NAD+ therapy at Defiance Health is available as an IV infusion (fastest and most effective delivery) or intramuscular injection. IV NAD+ produces a noticeable boost in mental clarity, energy, and mood for most patients, often within the first session. It is also used to support cellular recovery, reduce neuroinflammation, and as an adjunct to addiction recovery protocols.

Bremelanotide — PT-141

Best for: Hypoactive sexual desire disorder, libido, sexual dysfunction in men and women

Bremelanotide (brand name Vyleesi) is an FDA-approved peptide specifically indicated for hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women, and is also used off-label in men experiencing reduced libido or sexual dysfunction. Unlike medications that work through the vascular system (such as sildenafil), PT-141 works through the central nervous system — activating melanocortin receptors in the brain that directly influence sexual desire and arousal.

This makes it a uniquely effective option for patients whose libido concerns are not primarily vascular in nature, and for women for whom few FDA-approved options have historically existed. It is self-administered as a subcutaneous injection approximately 45 minutes before sexual activity, as needed.

Oxytocin

Best for: Mood, stress, social bonding, libido, postpartum support, sleep

Often called the "bonding hormone," oxytocin is a naturally occurring peptide produced in the hypothalamus that plays a central role in emotional wellbeing, stress regulation, social connection, and reproductive health. It is FDA-approved and widely compoundable, and is used therapeutically across a range of clinical contexts.

In a wellness and hormone optimization setting, oxytocin is used to support mood stability, reduce anxiety, enhance intimacy and libido, improve sleep, and support postpartum recovery. It works synergistically with hormone therapy — many patients on BHRT find that adding oxytocin further improves their overall sense of wellbeing and emotional resilience. Available as a nasal spray or sublingual troche.

Glutathione

Best for: Immune support, detoxification, skin brightness, antioxidant protection, liver health

Glutathione is the body's most powerful endogenous antioxidant — a tripeptide produced naturally in the liver that neutralizes free radicals, supports immune function, detoxifies the body of environmental toxins and heavy metals, and plays a critical role in cellular health and longevity. Like NAD+, glutathione levels decline with age, chronic stress, alcohol use, and exposure to environmental toxins.

When taken orally, glutathione is largely broken down in the digestive tract before it can be absorbed. At Defiance Health, we offer glutathione via IV infusion or intramuscular push injection — delivering it directly into the bloodstream for dramatically superior bioavailability. Patients commonly report improved energy, clearer skin, reduced brain fog, and enhanced immunity. It can be administered as a standalone treatment or added to any IV drip.

Methylcobalamin (Vitamin B12)

Best for: Energy, neurological health, mood, metabolism, B12 deficiency

Methylcobalamin is the most bioavailable, active form of Vitamin B12 — an essential nutrient that plays a foundational role in energy production, red blood cell formation, nervous system function, and mood regulation. B12 deficiency is extremely common, particularly among adults over 40, vegetarians and vegans, and anyone on certain medications (including metformin, commonly prescribed for blood sugar management).

Unlike oral B12 supplements, which have variable and often poor absorption, intramuscular B12 injections deliver the nutrient directly where it's needed. Most patients notice a meaningful lift in energy and mood within 24–48 hours of their first injection. B12 shots are quick, affordable, and available as a walk-in service at both our Alamosa and Centennial locations.

  • Tirzepatide (Mounjaro), Semaglutide (Ozempic), Liraglutide, (weekly injections)

Weight Loss, Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health

Semaglutide is a selective GLP-1 receptor agonist, while Tirzepatide is a dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. Retatrutide is an investigational peptide that acts as a triple agonist, binding and activating the glucagon, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists (also known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, incretin mimetics, or GLP-1 analogs) represent a class of medications used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. These medications interact with the parts of the brain that reduce appetite and signal a feeling of fullness. Another role of GLP-1 is to prompt the body to produce more insulin, which reduces blood glucose (sugar).

    Clinical Evidence

Semaglutide/Wegovy: At week 68, semaglutide-treated participants lost an average of 14.9% of baseline weight, compared with 2.4% for those assigned to placebo (untreated).

Tirzepatide/Mounjaro: A phase 3 randomized, controlled clinical trial demonstrated that tirzepatide led to a 20 percent reduction in body weight over 72 weeks.

Retatrutide has been found to produce the greatest weight loss among GLP-1 receptor agonists and co-agonists. It outperformed other agents like tirzepatide and semaglutide in terms of mean weight reduction

  • Bremelanotide (PT 141, Vyleesi)

Bremelanotide, sold under the brand name Vyleesi, is a medication used to treat low sexual desire in women. Bremelanotide is administered intranasally or as a subcutaneous injection. Specifically PT-141 is used for low sexual desire which occurs before menopause and is not due to medical problems, psychiatric problems, or problems within the relationship.

Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is the most prevalent female sexual health disorder. Hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) is a persistent deficiency or absence of sexual fantasies and desire resulting in significant distress or interpersonal difficulty. Women with this disorder may display a lack of motivation for sexual activity, reduced responsiveness to erotic cues, a loss of interest during sexual activity, and avoidance of situations that could lead to sexual activity.

  • Gonadorelin for Testicular Support

Gonadorelin is a peptide that stimulates the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), helping maintain natural testicular function in men undergoing testosterone supplementation. It supports healthy sperm production and testicular size, preventing testicular atrophy often associated with long-term testosterone therapy. This makes it a valuable addition for those seeking to optimize their hormone therapy while preserving fertility and overall testicular health, & one of many ways that Defiance Health is set apart as the most experienced, thorough hormone clinics in Colorado & the USA.

  • SAFETY WITH PEPTIDES

The only peptides safe for human use are those prescribed by a licensed prescriber and sourced from reputable, regulated compounding pharmacies or manufactured as an FDA-approved drug.

Avoid "Research-Only" Products: Products sold online as "research chemicals" or "not for human use" lack necessary safety and quality controls. These can be contaminated, mislabeled, or contain incorrect dosages, leading to significant health risks.

  • If you are considering peptide therapy, your safety depends on using a legitimate, prescribed product under the care of a medical professional.

Seek Medical Guidance: Consult with a qualified healthcare provider for an evaluation to determine if peptide therapy is appropriate for you.

Verify Your Source: Your medication should come directly from your prescribing physician or a licensed, U.S.-based compounding pharmacy.

Be Aware of Risks: Common side effects can include injection site reactions (redness, swelling), nausea, and headache. Discuss potential risks and unknown long-term effects of newer compounds with your doctor.
